Spell Bound by Rachel Hawkins
3.0

What am I supposed to say? That I liked this book? Did I? Umm..to an extent yes. Part 1 was full of awesome. Part 2 seemed easier than it should have been and Part 3? I didn’t like it at all. Why? Cal died. Cal freaking died. He died to save Sophie and he did not have to but he did because he was her betrothed and he loved her, but why? Why the third guy in the love triangle does have to die? I was hoping for romance between them or I was hoping for him to like someone else or damn! I like Archer, I really do and I think Mercer and Cross make a good pair but why did Cal have to sacrifice himself. Couldn’t he be alive and be on the sidelines?
Everything happened too quickly I guess. I mean Sophie turned back into a demon in like one line and then flipped out and was controlled by Lara in the next where she had a strong urge to kill her best friend Jenna but right there in the other line, she was back to normal and in control. Why was that an issue if it had to end so quickly? It seriously did not make sense to me. Also, the whole walk in the Underworld really seemed like a piece of cake. Yeah, all of them didn’t really have to go because then there would be even less instances of those nightmarish experiences or well what they called nightmarish. It didn’t really look like a big deal to me you know. I think Cal is like my favorite character along with Sophie’s dad and Sophie herself followed by Archer. He saw his own death down in the Underworld and still he took all that. I really hope there were more of Cal and his thoughts and what he felt. Oh God, why did he have to die? I know I sound all whiny, but I can’t deal with my favorite character’s death when everyone else gets a happy ever after. It’s so not fair. *sobbing*
*wipes stray tears* Moving on, I think there should’ve been more light shed upon Lara Casnoff’s magic secrets. I don’t understand how she turned all of those hundred students into demons in the blink of an eye. I mean, yeah, there was some time between the plan being formulated and then being executed, yet it was shit fast. Also, how did Mrs. Casnoff become all strong and less crazy at the end moment? What led her to that so late? Also, wasn’t it mentioned earlier in the book somewhere that humans couldn’t travel in the Itrenis or whatever the hell it’s called? How did all the Brannicks manage to? Maybe I don’t have my facts straight but I think I don’t understand and it seemed like a screw-up to me. There were grammatical errors in the edition I had. I’m not sure if that’s the case with all the books so I’m not going to comment much on that.
To sum it all up, the action part could seriously have been worked upon. It seemed like a lot of time had been put into building the final scene but then when the time came there was no spark and it was a big disappointment. I think the ending was justified. I’m guessing the series ends here? Only with the exception of Cal not being alive, everything worked out in the end. I thoroughly enjoyed Mercer’s sarcastic remarks and witty comebacks and Archer was ever the asshat. Elodie got a kind of closure, Jenna was great. Oh damn! What was the deal with Izzy and Torin? What? Now will there be another book? I was going to rate it 3.5, even after Cal died, but now it’s only 3.
