Esperanza Rising by Pam Muñoz Ryan
5.0

A beautifully woven tale of loss and new beginnings, Esperanza Rising was inspiring without being clichéd. I enjoyed the thematic arrangement of chapters and the growth of the title character from beginning to end. This was a book that a 5th grade class read at a school where I interned in San Diego, and I could easily see the educational appeal for the geographical relevance and racial issues/history treated in the book. Esperanza Rising is surely a YA classic for the ages.
