Magic Lessons: The Prequel to Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman

3.0

This is one of those books that is beautifully simple. I had wanted to read it since I was a fan of the Practical Magic film. This book has a simple storyline heavily influenced by early American history. It is well-written and has beauty and elegance in its style. I loved the inclusion of herbal remedies from the different areas visited. I also loved the additions of little fun facts of historical peoples and events especially the information about Captain Kidd and his relationship to Trinity Church which I admit I looked up to verify and find out more. It didn't have any sense of urgency or tension in the climax scenes. I just enjoyed reading it but it didn't thrill me or evoke any special senses.
