Reader, Come Home: The Reading Brain in a Digital World by Maryanne Wolf

challenging informative reflective medium-paced

3.0

This book was an exploration of the way in which we as a society are changing as readers. Wolf's concerns are especially geared towards children who are growing up in a fully digital world, one where their attention is being pulled in a variety of directions at every moment. With this in mind, Wolf worries that readers will no longer be able to make deeper connections and focus for longer periods of time when reading, and she explores all the ways in which this will negatively impact society as a whole.

Conversely, Wolf does explore the benefits of digital reading, especially in the case of struggling readers.  At its core, it seems that Wolf is looking for a balance between Old World and New World when it comes to print reading and digital.

Wolf's explanation of how the brain learns to read was really informative, and I enjoyed learning some of the science behind how reading works.  While I understand Wolf's concerns regarding how rapidly our society is changing in terms of how we read and what we read, I did find her writing style to be a longwinded and complicated for the sake of being so.  In my opinion, her desire to write in a more pretentious manner diluted her argument, and I could see how her writing style would lead to people ignoring the more important components of her message.
