The Secret Place by Tana French
5.0

This book took me forever to read. Not because it was bad, but because it was Tana French and 500 pages. Tana French novels deserve to be read carefully, like a piece of hard candy tucked into your cheek pocket and savored. If you speed through them, you're doing something wrong. French novels are an escape stunt, a journey.

I have enjoyed French's writing and will continue to do so - this book was no exception. I appreciated that this entire book, a huge tome, took place in just 24 hours, interspersed with flashbacks. The short cast of characters felt so real you could reach out and touch them, graze them with your fingertips. I didn't quite expect the ending, though admittedly I wasn't as shocked as I probably should have been.

If you appreciate the finer points and drama of YA literature but also the real-life struggles of "adult" novels, give The Secret Place a try. I'd rank it #2 after In The Woods, personally. And I will pick up book #6 without a doubt.
