i was surprised by this book— maybe it is because i listened to it on tape but the tone of the story felt very different from Flynn’s other books. maybe it is also been a while since i’ve read one of her books.

i really enjoyed the complicity of the narrative— there are so many stories happening at once with bread crumbs of the other stories. there seemed to be this artful craft of these stories falling into place— especially as ben and patty’s story’s collide in the end. there are red herrings left and right— as is in life.

was expecting more from the murder reveal. honestly felt a bit easy to have this family get murdered by two different people in one night. but i’m also glad this take didn’t unravel into some weird convention that the mystery genre loves to do.
