From Blood and Ash
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
4 feels strong, but I did find it compelling and am excited to continue the series.
was hard to tell how dark it was gonna get with her lessons from the Duke. def hinted at sexual align with obvious physical abuse, but thankfully was not too explicit on the sexual abuse.
had trouble understanding the various races, though that clearly became part of the point. but I could tell early on that hawke seemed to have some vampire traits, moving super swift, hella good senses. obvs didnt make him any less hot though. also started to pick up that eh was probs the dark one, but again, still hot. in some ways reminded me of the devil in Addie la rou, sometimes they are also looking for love.
I liked penelaphe/poppy as a protagonist, she came around pretty quickly to understanding her who world was built on lies and she was being used. and embraced her sexual desires, so that was fun. the book def picked up after the attack on the royals and when she and hawke left the kingdom.
so atlantians have some vampire qualities, but generally feed on each other as opposed to mortals, and can be in daylight. but a king back in the day fed on a mortal he loved and turned her into ascendant, which is same same as vampire. ascendants ultimately fought and tried to kill all atlantians, and then would feed on mortals but not let them feed/drain them too much creating Cravens, kinda sad zompires. they let them run amook just enough to scare folks into handing over younger children to feed ascended, and promised rich mortals they would get to ascend. I think.
down for all of that to end, but kinda funny at the end when hawke just announced they getting married. he did not ask.
