Emily by Rachael Flanery, Rachael Flanery, Eden Francis Compton, Eden Francis Compton

5.0

This book rocked me to my core! I was not expecting something like this.

The story’s main protagonist is a very complicated character, in a very unusual way. Due to the subject of this book - about a man’s obsession with the works of Emily Dickinson- I expected this to be somewhat of a historical fiction tale. It’s not. While it does contain exploratory glimpses into Dickinson’s life, the story focuses mostly on being more of a poetic character study of the main character, Teddy Maine.

The story also contains many wildly bizarre and horrific events that Teddy must navigate and mentally and emotionally deal with as his obsession to write a play based on Emily Dickinson unfolds and gets increasingly complicated. It all culminates in a truly shocking climax that ends perfectly.

A definite 5 star read. Highly recommended book.
