Me, Frida, and the Secret of the Peacock Ring by Angela Cervantes

4.0

Paloma Marquez's mom has a fellowship to study in Mexico for the summer and Paloma gets to go along to visit the country where her dad grew up (he died when she was little). At first she'd prefer a typical 6th grade Kansas summer, but as she begins to learn more about her dad's favorite artist - Frida Kahlo - and gets involved in an attempt to recover one of her lost creations, she begins to change her mind about Mexico.

There was so much to like about this middle grade mystery, including that the twist totally surprised me. My daughter's a big Frida Kahlo friend so I started reading it to her, but when we ran out of time on our library loan, I sped through and finished it on my own.
