I definitely wouldn't read this one as the series' first book. Chronologically, it's the third book, and reading the [b:The Last Wish|40603587|The Last Wish (The Witcher, #0.5)|Andrzej Sapkowski|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1529591917l/40603587._SX50_.jpg|2293675] and [b:Sword of Destiny|25454056|Sword of Destiny (The Witcher, #0.7)|Andrzej Sapkowski|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1671660198l/25454056._SX50_.jpg|1877799] helps this one go down much easier because it is so politically heavy. Overall it's still an enjoyable read and helps set up everything to come in the following books.
