The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo
by Taylor Jenkins Reid
"I loved being able to show a part of myself that I had long buried. I was happy to find that when I dug it up, that part was still there, waiting for me."
"When you dig just the tiniest bit beneath the surface, everyone's love life is original and interesting and nuanced and defies any easy definition."
I'll start off by saying I was mildly disappointed because this book has been so hyped up by every single person I follow who has read it. I went so far as to buy the book at full price, which is a luxury I don't usually afford myself. But halfway reading through, I already decided not to keep it. I expected it to be a new favorite by the way everyone described it, but that's the risk of listening to other people's opinions. It lands somewhere between 3-4 stars for me. The structure was good and the characters were interesting but I wanted MORE out of the writing because I felt disconnected most of the time, save for some key moments and some sweet lines here and there. Mostly, it was plain to me and there were still a lot of clichés as well. But, I think it's a new approach to the celebrity-life genre, which admittedly I don't have any interest in so maybe that explains things. And it incorporates interesting elements, my favorite being the concept of marriage. Evelyn and Harry's marriage was the best literal definition of marrying your best friend I've seen. I could see this story coming to life in movie-format, which would be fantastically fitting for this story...And I just looked it up and apparently they ARE making an adaptation so if they do a good job, that should be exciting.
