L.A. Confidential
by James Ellroy
An amazing character study set in a beautifully horrible 1950s LA. I love the way the three cop MCs slowly reveal and develop themselves as they deal with an incredibly complicated case of murder, vice, and massive cover-ups. The relationship that develops between Bud and Ed is really amazing.
I do think this book could use about another 75-100 pages to flesh out the actual mystery (which is saying something, because the edition I read clocked in at 496 pages). The ending depends far too much on hastily revealed backstory that should have been more carefully threaded in throughout the text. All the little intricate layers feel a bit undercooked instead of perfectly satisfying.
That said, Ellroy makes the whole ride darned enjoyable.
