Notes on a Scandal by Zoë Heller
5.0

It has to be said, at the start, I wondered why the book was being told from Barbara's point of view. She starts off as a stranger to Sheba - but then you begin to see Barbara worming her way into Sheba's life and appreciate what a lonely character she is. It's sinister and cunning and scarily-realistic.

Because of Barbara, it's not a run-of-the-mill-teacher-and-pupil story. It's distant from all the details of the affair, but still keeps a dark and suspicious tone.

I loved how it touched upon the double standards of the media: how a female going after an underage male is treated very differently to a male going after an underage female.

And this hasn't happened in a long while; I didn't like any of the characters, but I loved the book.

Sidenote: I'd never heard of the Penguin Ink range; they got tattoo artists to design covers for contemporary classics and they're absolutely gorgeous.
