Inkheart
by Cornelia Funke
I read this novel as a child an innumerable amount of times so I must admit one reason why I love this book is the childhood nostalgia of it. Re-reading this as an adult, I still got the same sensation of being entirely absorbed inside another world. Dustfinger remains my favourite character and I wish there had been more chapters from his perspective. The concepts in this book are really interesting and although the themes are dark it feels like a good introduction to children that the world isn’t as good or benevolent as adults would like them to believe. Cornelia Funke is a beautiful writer. I felt like I could truly imagine the characters as real people and visualise the settings in vivid detail. One criticism is the length of the novel, I feel like cutting it down would have made it more effective and I understand why people found the story to have been dragged out. Overall, a wonderful read and reiterated my love of the fantasy genre.
