Black Majors: Baseball
by James Whitaker
informative
inspiring
Black Majors: Baseball by James Whitaker with Davian Chester provides brief biographies on five key Black baseball players. It gives the stats, a brief bio, and a "Key Myth" associated with each of these players. It's a fun and easy read perfect for kids (and adults) interested in the history of baseball. The images are simple, clear, and engaging – I can imagine my students trying to do the same poses as the players in the books.
I wish it had more story elements to it, especially because the first few pages don't align with the rest of the book's focus on stats. But seeing the stats listed like they may be on baseball player cards or on the screen at games makes it a really fun book.
It ends with an image of other Black baseball players' names beside a computer keyboard an mouse. I really liked this ending because it encourages readers to do their own research to learn more. I hope more books can be made like this for other sports and especially for Black women in sports.
Thank you to BooksGoSocial and James Whitaker for this ARC!
