Ok, wow. Although I was very excited to be able to read this, as I received it from the library only a day after release, this blew my expectations away. The plot was intense, and very creative. It has some darker themes and is a bit scarier than the original trilogy, and kept me on the edge of my seat. A few recurring characters and old plot devices, but I thought that they were seamed in well. Painful character development that is really well written, with a satisfying ending that leads to the trilogy perfectly. I think it could have been written more appropriately for the younger audience it is marketed to, even if Haymitch is narrating. Could use a round of edits for wordy sentences as well. But overall, such an achy, soulful, tragic, prequel for a fantastic character.

There is a couple sentences where it is noted that a character has a gay relationship, and a different character expresses approval. This is all brief, and seemed just shoved in there to get diversity points. There is a romance that is expressed, but nothing more than some kissing which isn't described too much. There is more cursing than the other books, but to the same level of d*mn.
