As Good As Dead by Holly Jackson

3.0

Personally, I felt the story should have wrapped up with book 2. It felt overly contrived and forced, unnecessarily going around in circles. Sometimes, you just have eccentric neighbors who aren't necessarily evil or bad, and it felt like the story was trying too hard to create drama. The sudden involvement of 'the good girl' with drugs and a serial killer neighbor were particularly jarring.

When Pip was kidnapped, it felt premature. The story hadn't even reached its halfway point, yet the villain was already revealed. Something felt off. The narrative became more gripping when she killed him, the highlight being her getting away with murder. I was 90% certain she would be caught. Individuals like her usually became prime suspects. Unfortunately, they often escape capture because the police only scratch the surface; they don't delve deeper. (Why police, why do you always disappoint us?)

Part of me secretly wished she would get caught. Nevertheless, everyone ended up safe and sound, although the ending lacked satisfaction. The fact that a 'murderer' could evade justice due to inadequate police investigation bothered me so much.
