The author really anthropomorphizes the trees in a really interesting way. I don’t think it’s a bad thing, but it is a challenging thing, because to say trees “smell” or “feel” or “see”, I don’t want to oversimplify trees and plants with human concepts, but it’s also a helpful way to connect with something so different, and in your internal heuristic of trees gives them a far more alive quality, just using these lively words for them. I’d be really interested to read or hear a discussion  about how we use the language for plants and trees in this way.
