Firekeeper's Daughter
by Angeline Boulley
This is my first novel about any Native American tribe. The book is a contemporary fiction novel about the Ojibwe tribe. I love how the author connected all the themes; coming of age, love, crime, romance, YA and ethnic traditions.
The novel is about Daunis a mixed Indian girl, whose father is Indian while her mother is French. She tries to figure out how she fits into her community. Her mother’s family doesn’t get along well with her father’s family. Daunis loves hockey and science. Daunis is grieving all through the entire book, but she changes and involves in a beautiful way.
I was shocked by all the twist and turns. The author Angeline Boulley did a great job by depicting each character well, that when something bad happens to any of them you can actually feel heartbroken for them.
I enjoyed learning about the Ojibwe tribe, as well as its complexities (the pansy ceremony made me sad). Women face so much violence in various communities they belong to. I would love to read more books with this kind of representation by a member of the community just like Boulley.
