Bloodlines
by Richelle Mead
This is a spin-off of Vampire Academy, and while I haven't read VA I really enjoyed it. IT wasn't imperative to read VA.
After Sydney Sage, an Alchemist, helped Rose Hathaway, a Dhampir, she's in the dog house. Alchemists don't help vampires. They protects humans from them. Sage is given a chance to redeem herself by being charged to protect a Moroi, Jill Dragomir. It's a dreadful nightmare and she's at risk of being called a sympathizer again.
This was a twist on vampirism that surprised me. I didn't expect vampires being able to do magic. I mean, you already suck people dry for supernatural abilities on top of life sustainability. It seemed a little overpowered. But the Alchemy element was epic! Sage is fiery and I love that alchemists get this unique tattoo to amplify their abilities. There aren't enough books that explore alchemy in fiction and YA.
Speaking of Sage. Sage and Adrian. Intriguing. Perfect together. While the plot didn't intrigue me that much, I loved the back and forth between them. It was engaging and it's what'll get me to continue the series. They have intense chemistry that had my eyes glued to the page whenever they were together.
I've really liked reading from Richelle Mead. It's a completely different world and completely original. Some characters came off a little dull at times and the story seemed to stretch with fillers in places, but I really liked the twists and turns. I'm pulled in enough that I want to read more.
