True Grit by Charles Portis

I was surprised at myself: I usually like books with female protagonists, and westerns are always fun. I went in to this book with the expectation that I would enjoy it a lot, and I was disappointed at every turn. The writing was colorless and bland, written with so little emotion or insight into the main character's head that at times I wondered if the book should have just been written in the third person, because it seemed like it was anyway. I didn't connect to anyone and I just found myself not caring about any of the characters' struggles. The only reason I stuck with this book to the end is because it was required reading for my english class. I really wanted to like this book, but I came away with a completely let down feeling and no satisfaction whatsoever. 1/10, would not recommend.
