Wizard's First Rule
by Terry Goodkind
This was more of a 2.5* book for me. I picked this up as I was on holiday and wanted a fairly long read and I had heard so many people who truly loved this series raving about it and recommending it to me. I was intrigued in just HOW it got such a good status and I was hoping that I would pick it up, read it, and fall in love with it.
Unfortunately for me that was not quite what happened. I would say that because I have read a LOT of other fantasy and High fantasy books and thus have a lot to compare this story to, I just found that there was noting truly unique about the story. I love reading about a world which has something a bit quirky and different to many of the other fantasy worlds I have read, and whilst i don't mind borrowed ideas too much, I would have preferred a lot more originality.
I did like the characters and I felt like the story was good, there was nothing I truly disliked and the writing style was decent, if not truly unique. I felt like the main character, Richard, was easy to imagine and the descriptions (although often a little long) helped me to imagine the world more clearly and the characters. I did like the idea of Mother Confessor and the Barriers between the worlds even though neither one is that original, and I liked the world itself but I would have to say that there is better fantasy writing out there too.
I found elements of the storyline were twisted and surprising, whilst other areas were fairly dull and easy to guess ahead of time. On the whole I would say that this is a good story if you want to start off the fantasy genre because it's pretty simple writing and there's noting too deep and scary about the storyline or characters. Personally, this wasn't unique enough for me to rate it very high, but I can see why many people (who may not have read other fantasies I have or who read this as their first fantasy) love this author and series. I am not sure I will continue with the series, but we shall see in the future...
