This was a good first book of the Jedi Academy trilogy. I found that I could not help but feel sorry for the characters, from Han never getting a break until the end with his horrendous journey to Luke having to find apprentices to teach to set up a new Jedi Order and Leah having to struggle being a mother alone as Han could not help her. (for reasons that are beyond his control)
Yet I found the villains well written and you can really hate them. I found Kyp's journey interesting and heartbreaking, especially when it comes to just how much the Empire had treated him. I also liked how they explored the remnants of the Empire and how, despite Emperor Palpatine being dead for a long time, he still has an effect on the world.
