Mare Barrow is a damm badass. After the events of last book, Mare is held captive by Maven. In chains of Silent Stone and on a constant watch by silencers, she passes the time reading, smashing plates, and plotting. Meanwhile, Cal, Cameron, and the other Scarlet Guard members and supporters plot their next moves including a rescue. Despite attempts, Maven remains victorious on holding Mare and torturing her in his non violent ways. With tensions in the court ramping up and without his mother, can Maven hold his title? or will the Scarlet Guard and Mare retake the kingdom? This was brilliant, slow but never boring, and complex in all the best ways. By adding in other points of view, Aveyard creates sympathy for characters like Evangeline and Cameron, who were previously thought to be a hindrance or a villain to the cause and Mare. I am so excited to finish this series and see where we go with this!
