This story is loosely based on a true event where a group of people are at a private event at the Vice-President's house in South America and some terrorists come in an take them hostage.  The story follows the hostages and the people that take them.  One of the hostages is a woman that is a faved opera singer and much of the story has to do with her.

This book is on a lot of must read books and best books and I've always meant to pick it up, but I just never got around to it.  Once it made the NYT best books of the 21st century I bumped it up.  I liked the book and the writing, but it wasn't my favorite.  I've read some of Anne's newer works and I liked those much more (I loved Tom Lake).  With this book, I didn't feel like I really got to know any of the characters in great depth because there were so many of them.  The ending was a bit shocking and I didn't see it coming.  I look forward to checking on the movie to see how the two compare.
