The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge
Did not finish book. Stopped at 0%.
I don't like to dnf books, it feels like a failing. But I really didn't like this one. People either had major nostalgia for this, having read it as a child, and loved it. Or maybe they saw the movie and could make some comparisons that way. I neither saw the movie or read the book growing up. There's something about it that made me feel icky from the very start and I don't know what it is. The stuff people said was sexist didn't bother me that much. It was a different time and things were permitted then that aren't now. Although the part about girls not supposed to be curious was just ridiculous. You can't learn anything if you're not curious. The religion aspects definitely made me uncomfortable though I'm not sure why as I am religious myself, though not the same as in the book. The preacher standing outside the church and lecturing his parishioners was just a hard no for me. If you feel the need to lecture me at least have the decency to do it privately. And I still might not take it well. Then there were the animals. Wrolf I could handle, he's just a really big dog. The hare? Fine. The cat? How far do you want me to suspend my disbelief? On top of all that it felt weird that an adult male was going into both the girls rooms while they were asleep. I get he was just putting out hot water and lighting a fire but it felt invasive to me. I know this doesn't cover everything that happens in the book, I read a lot of reviews, but this is what I personally read.
