Winter in Thrush Green by Miss Read

3.0

A good choice for winter reading. (There's a Christmas chapter or two but this is mostly a winter story.) I'm reading Miss Read in publication order so this is my 2nd visit to Thrush Green. (So far I prefer Fairacre and its inhabitants.) Mrs. Curdle is gone (although her fair lives on, apparently) but there is a cat named after her that turns up a lot. Which was...interesting, I suppose, if not downright confusing.

Romance is in the air but it's more like "romance." Several matches are made but they're not the heart pounding kind. One is sweet and one is a little more calculated, but funny. None are your usual romantic couples.

Plot? Miss Read books are a lot of things but plot-driven is NOT one of them. There's a statue to be built on the village green (seems odd to do that in the winter, but whatever) and there are various shenanigans, including a serious assault of the teacher that is glossed over a bit. (The "bad guy" is exactly who'd you expect it to be, but it's sad because it seems a lot worse than his usual failures.)

I wanted more Ruth and the young doctor but maybe they'll be featured a bit more in the next Thrush Green book. But that will be a while before I get to it, because Miss Read returned to Fairacre for a long spell before continuing the Thrush Green series.
