I made the mistake of reading this book without having read the first two. It both means that it was rather difficult to get into the book because so many people are introduced in the first several chapters - several of which are characters from earlier books - and it means that I now have heard spoilers from the first books, which might affect my enjoyment of reading them. That said, I quite liked the book, which is particularly surprising since Sebastian Bergman is not at all a likeable character. And I usually don't like books if I don't like the main character. I found the characters in general interesting and I was really interested in knowing how the two main storylines would connect. And yes, of course I knew they would be connected. The end left me wanting for more. So I guess that's a success.
