Really beautiful and intimate set of stories about the complex emotions around black women and their hair. As a white woman, I am absolutely certain that a lot of this went over my head and I'm sure it resonated more deeply with folks who have lived similar experiences. But even for an outsider to the cultural and familial weight of black hair care and maintenance, it was a really interesting combination of stories. There were little vignettes about family and awkward anecdotes about puberty and self-identity. I loved the illustration style as well. The first page kinda stunned me a bit because the lines were some intense and dark and dense, but I got used to it really quickly and the business of the visuals were still easy to parse and REALLY got the motions across. Great read and a really exciting look at the different styles of storytelling that illustration and comics can lend themselves to.
