Me and Earl and the Dying Girl
by Jesse Andrews
The beginning of this book was very strong. I related a lot to the main character and his self-deprecating ways, especially when I was in high-school. And his love for film.
Something that pulled me out of the book was the story was supposed to be about Greg and his friendship with Rachel. I feel as the reader, we got sucked into this whirlpool of self-deprecation, immature boy who couldn't articulate how to feel about a dying girl. I couldn't get connected to Rachel enough so when she passed, it didn't affect me like it should have.
The scene where Greg realized his film for Rachel was crap and started to feel deeply/have a breakdown when she was dying was the turning point. I thought, "Yes! Finally! Some human emotions!"
But it didn't live to anything important. This book was also too short in my opinion. It needed at least 100 more pages to really get the story across. Near the end, it was cluttered and messy.
Also, I understood the talk of girls in this book because they are teenage boys... but at some point I was like OKAY. WE GET IT. YOU DONT UNDERSTAND GIRLS BECAUSE YOU ARE A DUMB TEENAGE BOY.
Sigh. It kept me entertained I guess, but I wanted more than that. Just kinda annoyed me near the end.
