A Local Habitation by Seanan McGuire

3.0

This book was not terrible, but it was frustrating in parts. For instance it was incredibly obvious that something was up with the phones, and frankly ridiculous that nobody caught on to that sooner. It was also pretty obvious that Alex and Terrie were the same person AND that they were somehow manipulating the emotions of the people around them.

It seems like the author is struggling to move the plot forward in a way that's believable, and the result is a main character who appears blind to pretty much everything that's going on around her.

That it took Toby so long to "discover" these things reflected really poorly on both her intelligence and her ability as a detective. What kind of detective can't "detect" really obvious things? A bad one. It makes me question her appointment as a knight. I mean what has she actually done in either of the first two books that was impressive, and NOT just a matter of relying on someone else to save her butt? Not a lot. One has to wonder if everyone would have died had she not been such an incompetent detective.

Also, the appearance of Connor seemed unnecessary. Tybalt could have done much that Connor did (which wasn't a whole lot) without changing a whole lot of the story. It seems like the only reason he turned up was to add a further inappropriate love interest. That he's even a contender just makes her look even less intelligent.

However despite these things I found the book enjoyable and I read it in only two sittings. I hope the next book is better.
