Green River Killer: A True Detective Story by Jeff Jensen
4.0
This was a really interesting book. I had no idea that it was based on true events but told from the perspective of the detective’s son. The cased lasted 20 years and you get to see what happened to this detective and his family during those 20 years. It has some great emotional moments and is so different from most detective stories.
The art is wonderful illustrated, well told and able to deliver on the emotional demands of the story. However it is completely in black and white, which I usually like, but this one was a bit stark. With so many characters it is sometimes hard to tell who is who, but you always know who the main character is. Also this story jumps around in time, which is handled fairly well. I sometimes missed the text cues at first (my reader edition was a bit pixilated). Color would have really helped define different moments in time and characters.
If you are interested in detective stories, cold cases, or serial killers then this is a really good read. Some of the art may be harder to ‘read’ for a first time comic book reader, but really delivers when needed. It’s a true story so there are no high-speed action stakes, but after I finished it I felt like I learned something.
