There are rom-coms that teeter on the line of being quirky and unbearable. This book tilted heavily to the latter and then fell in.
That's unbelievable harsh, but the longer I've sat on this book, the more I've realized that I should've DNF'd it instead of powering through to the end. These characters, particularly Annie, were just so annoying. She herself went over the quirky line so, so quickly. I get meet-cutes aren't realistic and are oftentimes a little cringe inducing, but the entire airport scene was kind of awful. It made me uncomfortable to read.
Not to mention the entire book happens over three/four weeks? It's a frustrating narrative that "I love you's" come that soon, especially given the trauma Liam mentions (which by the way, was never really explored. He kind of just told Annie what happened and the author did nothing else with that guilt for the most part). Their relationship is underdeveloped and it makes the entire book give off the vibe of being slapped together and the epilogue unrealistic.
More than anything, there was just. No. Drama. Vanessa literally does nothing when she finds out they're together, the investor doesn't give a shit, nothing. There's a vague blackmail plot line that lasts all of ten pages (done by a character we've met exactly once and heard about twice) and it doesn't even make sense? And all it really does is make me dislike Annie more. She's like "I'm gonna jump on a train and kick him in the balls! Girlboss right here!"
No. The severe lack of planning and lack of drama and groveling really just solidified how much I disliked this.
