This book doesn’t hold back any punches in showing us the this world and the characters that are living in it. While at times I felt the pacing was a bit off, these are some things that stuck out to me:
- I appreciated the author weaving in actual information on this country’s prison system through footnotes. A reminder that while this book is labeled as “dystopian”, it doesn’t stray far from reality.
- I thought it was interesting getting multiple perspectives, from the players to viewers, and those making the decisions that dictate people’s lives.
- I loved the introspection that was happening here. The players had a lot of thoughts about what forgiveness looked like and reflecting on what their time in this program was like.
Overall, this was a very informative and gripping read.
Some quotes:
“From Rico seeped a plague that ruined the lives of men and all they touched: He needed to be seen as strong, menacing, powerful.”
“On this one thing you don’t negotiate. You love through all the people you’ve been and hope you have a chance at being better.”
