Marcelo in the Real World by Francisco X. Stork
5.0

Marselo, a teen with Asperger's, is forced to work at his father's law firm over the summer so that he can experience "the real world," and is forever changed by this experience.

This was an incredibly HEAVY and thought-provoking story. I cried a couple of times while making my way through it. Marcelo pays a very heavy price for his "real world" experiences. This was a very hard book for me to read, not just because of what was going on in the story, but because the author paints such a poigant and honest picture of our culture and the bad things we do to each other. As much as I loved the book, when I finished, it felt a little bit like I'd been punched in the face.
