Trial by Combat by Shirley Jackson

4.0

shirley jackson's short stories - 4/25

this left me feeling so eerie. the neighbour down under (shirley jackson really likes writing about neighbours, doesn't she?) steals from the female mc emily, while she is at work (go get that bread, girlie) so emily goes and wants to tell her neighbour mrs. allen to stop but then chickens out, then decides to steal herself from mrs allen, therefore losing her moral highground and putting herself on the same level as mrs allen (old ladies really have nothing better to do when they retire, do they T_T).

except now mrs. allen is all like "i'll come see you later in your flat"

??????? HUHHHH, i would NOT continue living with a person like that. ain't no WAY.

it felt so eerie because it seemed like when emily intruded upon the space of mrs. allen, she opened a can of worm that she should've let alone, because now she showed herself to be cut of the same cloth.
