First half was very very rough. Jay must have gotten a new editor for the "Empire" trilogy because the amount of metaphors and similes was nearly unbearable. Also I think it was mentioned approximately a thousand times that Mia is 16 years old and the cat is made of shadows, we can stop mentioning it at a certain point, you know? Second half picked up a lot and saved me from DNFing, much more interesting once the plot picked up.
I love Jay and the "Empire" series but I do find it weird when men write about children, especially girls (in this case, a 16-yo), having sex and getting magical boob jobs. Will try book 2.
