The Secret History by Donna Tartt

5.0

I expected this to be really difficult to get through, but after the first 150 pages or so, I got completely stuck into reading it and I really loved it. There were so many instances while reading this that I had to put the book down and just stare into space for 5 minutes. Usually that's how you know whether a book is good or not.

Donna Tartt is a genius storyteller. With this group of morally grey characters and told in the perspective of an unreliable narrator who at times seems to be on outside, this story was rich and full of character. This book honestly felt like a fever dream. I felt as though I was living out the story. At times it felt a bit slow and sometimes I felt like nothing had really happened within the last 50 pages, but something about this story keeps you hooked. It was ridiculously addictive.

I understand why this gets mixed reviews because it's pretentious and annoying, but I think that's what is so beautiful about it. You love it but you hate it. It'll stick with you for a long time.

I can't wait to pick up more of Tartt's works.
