The Ugly Stepsister
by Aya Ling
I was sucked into this book right away. It doesn’t hurt that the story starts off pretty quickly; we learn the most about Kat from her time as the ugly stepsister. I was soon very absorbed in this story, wondering just how she was going to get Cinderella and the prince together.
While reading, I was constantly reminded of the movie Enchanted, except for the fact that Kat was the odd woman out in this story. I was also reminded of the Disney Channel cartoon Sophia the First. Kat doesn’t understand how her “sister” can be so ignorant of the outside world, much like the behavior Sophia sees in her stepsister, Amber, and the other royalty.
I kept thinking how I would have adapted to Kat’s new life. I’m probably just as clumsy as she is, definitely no graceful, beautiful princess. I think even a more traditionally “girly” girl would have trouble acclimating to her new life. However, not many other teen girls would have had the guts to face grown, angry men like she did to help the working children. I liked that even in this book-turned-reality, there are bad things, like how the servants are treated and how the children are worked so hard. There’s also a scandal involving just how Cinderella and Kat are related but I don’t want to give that secret away.
Overall, I loved this book! While it is definitely young adult novel, adults who enjoy a good fairy tale will enjoy it just as much. If you’re looking for an escape from reality, pick up The Ugly Stepsister. It would also be a great beach read if you’re looking to extend summer a bit. I’m definitely looking forward to more books from Aya Ling.
I received this book to review. All thoughts are my own.
