Vengeance of the Pirate Queen
by Tricia Levenseller
The Daughter of the Pirate King duology was an amazing surprise. I'm usually not a pirate girl, but those books sucked me in from the very first page. I liked the characters, I liked the romance, I liked the plot and all the twists and turns. So, when I discovered that a third book was gonna be written I didn't know how fast to pre-order my copy. When I saw the book on Netgalley I of course also requested a copy there and Pushkin Press granted me a copy.
The first few chapters of this book were amazing. I was sucked in again, just like with the first two books, and really enjoyed reuniting with these characters and this world. However, at some point the book started to lose my interest. I was still reading all the words, but I actually stopped caring about what I read. The plot wasn't really my thing, I didn't really have a connection with Kearan and I was mostly still reading to just finish the book.
I just didn't really feel this book. I don't think it's because the book is bad. Once more the writing style is lovely. The sentences flowed nicely, I could fly through the book and the dialogues sounded really natural. I also love how the author balances the characters being pirates with them still being actually good people. They're just willing to cross certain lines to deal with the bad people in this world, lines non-pirates don't wanna cross.
I also think the author came up with an exciting adventure for these characters. Something that does fit into this world and will have consequences for future books, because I don't doubt there will be more books set in this world. The pacing is also quite nice, combining action scenes with smaller and more intimate and personal scenes. I just didn't have the same kind of click with the story as I had with the previous two books.
So, I guess it's a case of "it's me and not the book" and if the author adds another book to this universe I will just dive in again, hoping the new book might fit me better.
