The story in itself is interesting. It is told with detachment. The fortunate outcome is, of course, clear from the beginning, since he is telling the story. I think the real suffering can only be understood by people who went through such events themselves. It might have been explained more clearly though, why they did not have opportunities for social improvement or a better life in their own country. By which I do not mean to say that they should not have tried to escape, they must have seen good reasons.
