The Girl in the Spider's Web by David Lagercrantz

2.0

I was interested in seeing how one would continue the great series started by Stieg Larsson and while this book had it's strong points, there were also some boring and unfortunate weaknesses that made the ending a bit of a struggle to get through.

Lisbeth Salander has become such a stereotype of action-thriller heroes in this book as everything she wants to do she can accomplish with little trouble. Even the main roadblock in front of her gets solved fairly easily with a little bit of help and that is the biggest issue. Previously she was a work in progress and you could see the progress she made in becoming a character who could handle everything. Now she is just already there and already the best.

The other problem is that the action sequences are too little and far in between. Instead of putting us in the action, we are told of the action as an afterthought, explaining what we should have been experiencing. it's like the book wastes so much time in setting with minor characters early on that when it comes time to get to the main events, there isn't enough time or space left to wrap it up. I was left feeling like there was no danger and it was too neat in the end.
