From Ant to Eagle
by Alex Lyttle
“From Ant to Eagle” is a sad and moving story about two brothers. Cal is eleven and his younger brother Sammy is six. I think that this book will become a children’s classic equivalent to “Bridge to Terabithia”. It is powerful and emotional. The writing is beautiful and the characters are realistic. I liked that this is a middle grade chapter book and told from Cal’s perspective. It makes Sammy’s story stronger and more poignant to readers. “From Ant to Eagle” is an amazing story that I recommend to all ages.
I kind of knew the outcome of the story going into it. I was looking at the cover before I started the book and made some deductions. Unfortunately, some of these deductions were spot on. The ribbon by the word ‘from’ gave everything away. Also, the title is explained in the first couple of chapters, so I saw some foreshadowing elements happening there, too.
I am not going to lie, I cried at the end. Not the kind of crying where tears streamed down my cheeks, instead my eyes filled with water I could not breathe normally, that kind of crying. It was so deep and moving and sad because it came from Cal’s perspective. I loved “From Ant to Eagle”, though. It is one of the best children’s books I have read in the while. This is Lyttle’s debut and I cannot wait to see what he writes next.
