The Rachel Incident by Caroline O'Donoghue
4.0

This book was not what I expected it to be. From the blurb and a quick glimpse at the first chapter, for some reason I expected a dark and twisty mystery, but instead I found myself in a very real and charming book about life in your 20s. While my 20s look nothing like Rachel’s or James’s, I could still find this book incredibly relatable. Dry humour and wit is scattered throughout this novel and, while both characters have romantic partners in this book, at its most fundamental this novel was a platonic love story between Rachel and James. I felt their connection so deeply and so strongly I almost wish that we saw more of that relationship. This book is perfect both for people in their 20s who are looking for that raw, real, relatable story that lets them know they’re not alone when things are tough, and also for those looking back on those years of finding your feet, discovering who you are and drinking wine out of cheap mugs. This book will not be for everyone, but could certainly be enjoyed by anyone. I saw someone compare it to Fleabag and while it was certainly not as funny, I totally understand the comparison.
