Leigh is saved from drowning by Tolly of the merfolk. Tolly then gets legs so he can pursue Leigh to get him to say “I love you” before the spell for his legs is broken at the next full moon.
But Leigh is a runner caught between two gangs and doesn’t feel he’s good enough for Tolly. However, together they are able to cleverly rid the neighbour hood of one gang and get out from under the other leader. Leigh doesn’t know about the spell and can’t say the words Tolly needs, but feels all the feelings.
When Tolly transforms into his monster-looking self, Leigh sees through his beastly appearance and loves him, no matter what.
Interesting fantasy novel. Some parts didn’t make sense, like Leigh “hiding out” while going around to people in the neighbourhood.
I like the merfolk culture and history, even though it’s treated Tolly harshly, and in the end, his world is also changed by his and Leigh’s relationship.
