Winter by Ali Smith

2.0

Ali Smith's refreshing writing style made quite the impression on me in the first book, Autumn. I expected no less from the second book in the series, Winter. Sadly, I didn't find the novel as engaging. To begin with, the writing style was disoriented and many a times only indicative of an underlying complex issue. I think with this book, Smith attempted at creating a bleak and forlorn atmosphere by talking about art, politics, emigrations, relationships in a manner that is disconnected but it only made me even more confused and disinterested.
Furthermore, I didn't care much for any of the characters in the story as their feelings and experiences were masked heavily by the third person narrative. So they merely felt like caricatures and plot devices and this is a huge turn off for me in a book.

However, I will be reading Spring only because I have heard many a great things about it.
