Letters to a Young Poet by Rainer Maria Rilke
5.0
emotional inspiring reflective medium-paced

A soulful, thoughtful, gentle, and honest set of letters that work as both a fascinating window into creativity, and a guide to life and emotion.

Rilke’s gift for language was massive. The way he composes his correspondence to the young poet uses words in such an artful and powerful way. He covers subjects from love and sex, to death and loss and loneliness and fear. There’s a clarity and an exhortation in them that encourages his friend to dig in, connect with the things that have happened and are happening to him, and to not be afraid to engage with the emotions that those circumstances provoke.

As a creative person, I found his approach simultaneously challenging and encouraging. There was more to glean than a single reading could provide. I will revisit this collection in the future, probably more than once.
