Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë

5.0

I'm genuinely amazed by how much I enjoyed this book. I never expect to enjoy 'the classics', and the closest to this I've read before is Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, which I hated and couldn't even finish. It's also not the kind of story I would normally be attracted to or enjoy, I only bought it because I found it on a sale.

I think the main thing that I found so good about it was Jane Eyre herself - it's been a long time since I've encountered a fictional character that I've liked so much, and found so relatable in terms of personality. All the other characters, good and bad, felt very real as well.

I was listening to the audiobook read by Thandie Newton, which I think also played a large part in my enjoyment. Newton is a talented voice actress and breathed a life into the book that I imagine I would have missed if I'd read a printed version. Definitely one of the best single-reader audiobooks I've ever listened to.
