Meant to Be by Emily Giffin

6/10. I really enjoyed the story but I had to listen to this book at 1.9X speed bc the narrators were just. that. slow. Overall, I thought the historical fiction aspect of this story was very well thought out and incorporated so much real history, that it felt authentic.

The story centers around Joe Kingsley, who is essentially the heir to an American Dynasty, and the woman he falls for Cate, who comes from a more troubled background. It begins with brief accounts of their childhood, Joe learning to be a charismatic, chivalrous, young man who carries the expectation to be "just like his father". But his father, implied to be a beloved American figure, died tragically when Joe was very young. Meanwhile they tell the story of how Cate escapes her awful home life by becoming a model and dropping out of school at age 16. Years later, Joe and Cate's love story unfolds in the public eye, airing all the struggles that come with dating a high profile celebrity.

I was so fascinated to learn at the end that the author loosely based this story on the real life love story of John F. Kennedy Jr. And Carolyn Bessette, who tragically died in a plane crash in 1999. It was an event I knew nothing about, as I was only 4 years old when it happened, so the history sent me down a Wikipedia rabbit hole!
