I was exited to dip my toe into dystopian, and thought this sounded compelling. The main plot was intriguing and unique, and the FMC was funny, but that’s about where the positives ended for me.
I know this is from the POV of a teen’s diary, so some inherent insufferable-ness is to be expected… but oh my GOD (and yes I’m a writing it because wtf was all that whole not swearing subplot 🤣), the rambling and side tangents were AWFUL. I have ADHD so I don’t usually mind a scattered inner monologue, that’s my brain on a daily — but I have *NEVER* skimmed a book so much in my life. And I don’t feel I missed anything important.
I didn’t even mind the stupidity of the FMC, she’s a teenager. It seemed on brand (although maybe slightly over done), but I could not get on board with the endless rambling for pages about things we didn’t need to know about. It was very repetitive. Again, I understand it’s diary format, but it’s also a published book that I think could have used some revisions for readability.
I kept reading, hoping the ending would justify the writing. But the ending was so anticlimactic. It just didn’t do it for me. If this wasn’t a book club read I probably would have DNFed.
8.5/10 for creativity and unique plot, but personally the writing just isn’t for me. I don’t think I care enough to buy the second book, unfortunately.
